Party - The Aftermath

Saturday 18th came and I wasn't ready at all. Just about managed to get the house / music / bbq ready in time for the first trickle of people. This turned into a flood about 7 (oh those fashionably late people) and much fun was had by all :-)

The only thing that didn't go quite to plan was the bbq - should have had two, and we needed the extra charcoal which Rich brought (cheers mate!) and the lighter fluid the guys got from the shops part way through (again, nice one guys!).

Apart from that, the party was a great success. I thoroughly enjoyed myself (after I calmed down and relaxed, anyway), and I think everyone else had a cool time too. Graham (Hannah's) got a bit fucked and chundered, but he made it to the toilet - hope you're feeling better now mate!

After most people had left, we were sitting outside until dawn, and we had the genius idea of playing football on the rec. The grass was full of dew; our bellies were full of beer (and alex's pear cider!); and we were sliding about all over the place. We lasted about half an hour before the spinning in our heads and sleeeep needage took over.

Many many thanks to all that came and brought all their booze and food - I've got soooo much left over :D Hope everyone had a kickass time and we'll DEFO do it again this summer.

Oh, and to everyone going Glasto - grrrrrrrrr I'm so jealous but hope it's a wicked festival!

Went to Nexus last night, and saw her again....

The difference this time was that, egged on by Hannah, I actually plucked up the courage to go talk to her.

Her name's Sia, and she's a first year Fashion & Photography student at the Institute, but she doesn't really like the fashion part 'cause it's so fake. She was asking about what I do (doh) and seemed interested (I always add that I'm gonna go back to Uni to do the International Relations course in a year or two).

I invited her and her friends to the party, but they can't make it. She said she'd see me around, but I'm not sure if she's interested or not. Oh well, guess I'll find out at Rhino's or Nexus next time.

Wednesday

Ho hum, went to Rhino's and Orange Rooms on Wednesday. Gen was out celebrating her birthday, which explains the unaccustomed trip to Orange Rooms. It's OK in there, and they do some very nice Rum, but it's a touch pricey. Gen looked absolutely gorgeous, I have to say.

Rhino's was pretty good, and I was having a great time, although Bob left early cos he wasn't having the best of nights (sorry to hear that, man). Then, about 15 mins before the end, someone smacked me in the face (possibly with their elbow) and my nose exploded in a bloody mess. Bastard thing wouldn't stop for ages either - there was so much blood everywhere, I looked a right state by the end.

I saw The Hottest Girl In The World(TM) there again - she looks like Rachael Leigh Cook (the middle one in the picture) in Josie and the Pussycats, and I go all gooey when I see her. BUT, she was snogging some bloke outside afterwards, so I guess nothing's gonna happen with her.

'For those of you who haven't seen it, this week's edition of Private Eye contains an illuminating piece on the wheeling and dealings behind an exclusive interview.

Apparently, Ashley Cole would only agree to hold this week's exclusive with the Observer on the understanding that the paper 'kit him out in a Prada suit'.

'No problems there until he said that he wanted to keep the suit and asked the newspaper to take care of matters. Prada wasn't prepared to play ball so editors were left frantically asking favours from other designers to keep the Arsenal footballer happy. He eventually walked off with a £1,000 suit from Paul Smith.'

Perhaps not realising the significance of the figure, Private Eye notes that 'Ashley Cole earns £50,000 a week.'

Still, there's no quibbling with their final point – in his Observer feature, Cole not only wore the aforementioned Paul Smith suit but a wristband proclaiming 'Make Poverty History.'

Debt Relief

I must say I'm pleasantly surprised by the US's change of stance, in allocating additional funds for use in debt relief. This was an unexpected victory for Blair. Don't get me wrong, the failure to secure the overall goals of 100% debt relief, written off against increases in the value of IMF gold reserves, is bad, but it could have been much worse if the US had not agreed to some extra money.

Now, obviously I'm not putting this solely down to the mph campaign, but did it maybe influence Blair to make his case a little more strongly to Bush? If so, then it is also a small victory for mph.

Of course I am speculating, but it seems feasible that, worried by a potential backlash at home, Blair pushed Bush slightly harder on the issue and was able to gain this concession from Bush.

Prior to the meeting, Bush had insisted that any funding for debt relief had to be taken from future aid, and not be additional help.

Exam and Sin City

Reckon I might even get a first for this module, which along with my other good results this semester should see me cement my 2.1 overall.

The Register had a great article on ID Cards last week.

I particularly think the last paragraph of the second section is relevant:-

"Now, the Government is clearly proposing to use the public's very real concerns about what it thinks of as 'identity theft' as a major justification for ID cards. The public thinks ID cards will help deal with 'identity theft', so very well, the Government will use that in support of the ID Cards Bill. It's listening after a fashion, we suppose, besides being something of an ID fraud in its own right."

The article goes on to blow the £1.3Billion figure, often trotted out as the value of ID Theft in the UK each year, out of the water. Most of what the £1.3Billion represents would not be affected by ID Cards, with The Register estimating that roughly £35Million of it could be linked to ID Theft which would be combated by ID Cards. The figure is probably somewhere in between, but if the London School of Econimics is right (see a couple of posts below...) then the annual cost is likely to be between £1.2Billion and £1.8Billion.

Rio Ferdinand must be the biggest liability ever. While I admit this latest incident does not appear to be his fault, he does have a habit of getting into these situations.

This time he was punched and possibly headbutted in a club in Sweden, last time he attacked a reporter with a bag of CDs.

He also must be one of the dumbest footballers in the Premiership (and that's saying something), having managed to injure his knee while sitting watching football on TV. Obviously there was the failing to piss in a bottle incident too.

Why I'm Against ID Cards

This article neatly sums up why I'm against the introduction of ID cards.

Can we trust the government, and all future governments, to use the data responsibly? Already many public sector bodies will have access to the data - what happens when companies or foreign governments with ties to this government want access to the data?

Such a large repository of information is implicitly a massive target for fraudsters. By centralising all the data, I predict that identity theft type crime will increase rather than decrease.

The London School of Economics has just finished analysing what the true costs of the scheme would be. Their findings were that the costs would be between £12bn and £18bn over ten years- twice to three times the government's estimate. This would make the cost per person between £200 and £300 instead of the £96 the government estimates.

As for the supposed benefits of ID cards; how will they prevent terrorism? Those who are considered dangerous are already known about.
Tackling the 'problem' of illegal immigration? All asylum seekers are already issued with compulsory ID cards, so the situation would not change.
As for tackling organised crime; where is the evidence that ID cards can change anything?
Spain has had compulsory ID cards since the 1930s, but these have not solved the social ills the government claims will dissolve under the might of ID cards.

Cup Final

The Cup Final was last week. It was fatastic. Except United, despite spending god knows how many millions on attacking players, continue to struggle to score. Rooney must have hit the post more than anyone else this season, and Ruud still doesn't quite look his sharpest.

Aresnal were torn apart by Rooney, Ronaldo, Scholes etc and should have won by a hatful. Alas it wasn't to be.

My mate James (a Spurs fan) told me about a helpline set up for disconsolate United fans.

£265 Million of debt will be transferred to Manchester United if, as seems likely, Malcolm Glazer reaches the 75% plus one share mark in the takeover of Man U. Shareholders United, the supporters group, own 18% - which is nearly all the remaining shares not owned by Glazer, so it might not come to that yet.

Basically, fuck off Glazer, we don't want you or your debt. I'd like to say you're gonna see how difficult we can make it for you, but I'm sure plenty of people will still go to the games and buy the merchandise :-(

Climate Change Denial Bollox

Recently, David Bellamy, of all people, has been quoted as saying that contrary to almost all scientific evidence, 555 of the world's 625 monitored glaciers have been expanding, rather than shrinking.

This has been seized on by climate change deniers as 'evidence' that climate change is not happening. Unfortunately, when the claims were investigated by George Monbiot of the Guardian (follow the link in the headline), he found them to be based on the work of Professor Fred Singer, whose source for the data was "a paper published in Science in 1989". There was no paper on glacial advance or retreat published in Science in 1989. The sources - iceagenow.com and 21st Century Science and Technology - cited by David Bellamy are renowned for their bizarre theories - such as the one about the British Royal Family running an international drugs syndicate.

Bellamy made one more error in his work - when typing, he meant to type 55% of the 625 glaciers rather than 555 of the 625. Makes quite a difference, though in the words of the World Glacier Monitoring Service, "[Bellamy's work] is complete bullshit".

Sadly, David Bellamy's comments carry weight, and his careless - and plain wrong! - words are being taken up by those who continue to deny the mountain of evidence of climate change.

An historic third term for Labour has been won. Congrats and thanks to all who voted Labour or tactically Lib Dem.

The result is pretty much what was expected, except the main beneficiaries were the Tories rather than the Lib Dems.

I'm delighted Labour has won, and I am pretty happy with the (estimated) majority of 66, as it shows Blair that we are unhappy at certain things, but still allows Labour to continue the good work it is doing to alleviate poverty, both here in the UK and around the world.

Why I (Can't) Vote Labour

This was supposed to be a summary of why I decided I could not vote Labour on Thursday.

I was undecided until recently, and then the full Legal Advice from Lord Goldsmith was published. I was angry that, in my opinion, Blair had not allowed MPs or even his own Cabinet to see the full advice, complete with caveats about the legality. I vowed I could not vote Labour.

However, my sister got wind of this and forwarded me some links to articles imploring Labour voters not to abandon the party.

Polly Toynbee argues in these articles that Labour has had success in helping those in the most need, and that while the Tories would not cut highly visible services much, plenty of programs to help those who need it most would quietly dissappear, without the middle classes really noticing.

I was forced to admit that Labour are still the best choice for those who believe in social justice, and will vote for them, despite differences over Iraq, Foundation Hospitals, Anti-Terror Laws, ID-Cards (more on this later, Bob...), and the general creep of privatisation and PFI.

In fact, reading the articles has instilled me with much more confidence in the Labour Party, with the realisation that they have not completely abandoned their principles.

I know, it's been fucking ages since I updated, but that's just cos I can't be arsed. But I will try, cos I want to try and get into some journalism so maybe this'll be a good start.

Back to Uni tomorrow, although I don't have any lectures till tuesday. Got a deadline though, and I've still got about 500 words to write :-(

With the election coming up, I'd like to point people in the direction of an article on the Guardian / Observer website about Immigration, just in case anyone was thinking of voting UKIP or Veritas or Conservative. I went to a rally in Manchester recently to defend asylum seekers, as a friend of mine was deported recently after 4 years in the country. Fatima came here from an area near Chechenya in Russia with her daughter, Toma, after Toma was kidnapped. Now, there is a lot of anti-Chechen feeling in Russia, and this extends to people from the Caucasus, like Fatima. The police in Russia beat her up when she went to them for help, so they fled. Fatima has been deported back to Moscow, but she cannot stay there, as the authorities view her as a threat, simply because of where she is from, so she will have to make her way somewhere else.

Toma is still in this country, and got married last year to Ali, an Iraqi who has indefinite leave to remain. Hopefully, Toma will also get indefinite leave to remain, and then maybe Fatima can be reunited with her daughter in a safe environment.

The first thing I did was to send kat a birthday card with no stamp on (although it got there really quick, and didn't cost kat anything to receive it, which they said it probably would do).

Just two days later, I accidentally deleted all the numbers from my phone memory! Fortunately they were still stored on the SIM card (or most of them were - I've lost a handful) or I'd have been really fucked.

Valentine's Day Moshacre

Ah, another quality event from A/IM and RockSoc!

Really wanted to go up to the event, as I didn't have a valentine (see previous post, Arse). Headed up on my own (god, how pathetic), but met loads of people I know up there, so that was OK. Hung around with Hannah and Graham for quite a while - think we said something about we were gonna get tattoos or summit.

Danced like a loon, and admired bob's girfriend's friend Jo. Didn't really feel like making a move though (or was probably just a bit too drunk...)

At least they weren't advertising a different event happening at the same time across in the bridge, this time.

Michelle, looking gorgeous as ever, invited me to her 'Pikie or Pashmina' themed house-warming party in a couple of weeks in London. Fits in with visiting my granddad, so should make it.

Last Legal Hunt Today

The Ban on hunting with dogs comes into force tomorrow, making today's hunts the last legal hunts. Personally, I'm in favour of the ban, however, I don't see it as a massive priority. I'm pleased it has come in, and pleased that the Parliament Act used to force it through without the Lords consent was upheld as a legal piece of legislation.

However, I fear that now there will be many illegal hunts, with massive strain on police resources.

I guess we shall see...

After the seriousness of the last couple of posts, something a bit lighter now :-)

Rhino's last night was great! The music was excellent, with highlights including Pixies, Biffy Clyro, Hell is for Heroes and Less Than Jake (Johnny Quest Thinks We're Sellouts!!!). Oh and Arcarsenal by At The Drive-In, causing Bob to almost collapse in excitement. The drinks flowed, and I managed the usually impossible (for me, anyway) feat of getting nicely drunk without going too far and falling asleep!

A New Iraq?

While I was over in Nice, the elections in Iraq took place. Is this the beginning, as the Bush Administration claims, of a new democratic Iraqw which will help spread democracy around the Middle East, or will the cycle of violence continue for years to come, possibily even causing civil war in Iraq?

The only English language tv channel I had in the hotel was CNN, and my French is not nearly good enough to understand fast-talking newsreaders. As a result, I now appreciate the media outlets we have here in the UK a lot more. The coverage the elections received on CNN was so optimistic and positive, I actually believed they had gone almost flawlessly, with massive turnouts all around the country. To be fair, as time went on, the channel did show some reports of lower turnouts in Sunni areas, and also showed reports from Arab newspapers and TV channels. However, the initial reporting left me with a very distorted picture of the elections.
Nonetheless, they went better than could have been expected, with many fewer deaths than I feared, and as high a turnout as I hoped in Shi'ite areas. Hopefully the Sunnis can be engaged in the drafting of the constitution, otherwise civil war is a very real possibility.

OK, so I decided to go to Nice with a coupled of mates for a few nights, and booked some flights and hotel rooms. Got to Heathrow and went up to the check-in desk...

"Did you all book together?" the woman asked. I'd only gone and fucked up the booking, so only one ticket was booked, not three.
How hard can it be to book some flights on the internet, you might ask. Well, too hard for me, obviously... Suffice to say, my mates weren't particularly impressed, and are probably plotting to kill me as I speak. They had to pay over £100 more each than the original ticket would have been for last minute flights!

Apart from that, and them arriving in Nice 4 hours after me, the trip was great, and really relaxing - the main objective after months of stress. Glorious sunshine during the day gave way to freezing cold as soon as the sun set, but had a great time just pottering about the old town and lazing on the beach.

Auschwitz - 60th Anniversay of Liberation

Yesterday was the 60th anniversasy of the liberation by Soviet troops of the Nazi Death Camp, Auschwitz.

Nearly one and a half million people, mostly Jews, were gassed to death there, and we should never allow anyone to forget this horrific crime. However, it should not be manipulated by anyone either, and certainly can not be used to justify the policy of the current Israeli government towards the people of Palestine. The path towards defeating Anti-Semitism lies in respect. Respect for all peoples. There needs to be a complete withdrawl of Israeli troops and settlers from the occupied territories, the dismantling of the "security wall/fence", and the agreement of the Right of Return for Palestinian Refugess. The Palestinian Authority has been willing to give up large parts of its country in order to accomadate an Israeli State, but this does not stretch to Palestinian land being confined to small enclaves.

Hate breeds hate, and the strong-arm tactics of the Israeli Army, bulldozing houses - declared illegal as 'Collective Punishment' , and frequent killing of Palestinian children, as well as the targeting of UN buildings including schools, only servers to spread the anti-semitism which does exist, and make Israeli security weaker, not stronger.

I've ranted long enough here, so I'll go, but I pray (well, I would if I was religious) for both sides in the conflict to understand that their actions do not serve their own interests, and only dialogue and compromise can bring about peace and security.

Well, my very first blog. Was just checking out Bob's cool blog, and thought I could get me one of those. Doubt anyone will care, but hey, you never know...

Today I cut off nearly five months of hair growth, and went back to my short hairstyle. God my head was cold. Wasn't sure if I should do it or not, and now I think maybe not, bu I can't exactly go and tell them to stick it back on.

Also got some Euros for my 3 day trip to Nice starting this Saturday. Won't be very warm, but it'll be a bit warmer than here, and much sunnier at least. Fingers crossed anyway. Just needed to get away from here for a bit, after all the stress of coursework (though thankfully no exams this time - lucky me).

I'm tired and going to bed soon, so nite all x
